Welcome to the Second Grade web page!

Second Graders will be challenged with many new learning experiences.  Second Grade is blessed with  wonderful teachers who are eager to shepherd their students in a Christian and loving environment.

Second Grade core subjects include Bible, Language Arts (Reading, Phonics, Writing, Spelling, and Language), Math, Science/Health, and Social Studies.  Our specialty classes include Art, Music, and Physical Education.  Each of these classes is taught by experienced teachers.

Bible
The best part of our day is Bible class.  Our students love the Lord and are always eager to hear Bible stories.  We focus on Bible Heroes throughout the Old and New Testaments.  Emphasis is placed on Christian character traits and how we can emulate them in our own lives.  We will be learning that these people were imperfect, yet they were loved by God, and they learned to love and obey God.  The Good News of Salvation is also woven into each lesson.  We will be learning about these heroes:
Moses is humble, courageous, and diligent.
Joshua loves God’s Word, obeys God, and follows God wholeheartedly.
Daniel is confident in God, faithful to God, and he is a success.
Job controls his tongue and is patient.
Esther listens to wise advice and is unselfish.
Elijah trusts God and is bold.
Jesus is merciful and compassionate.
Ruth is loyal and a loving servant.
David faces the giant and is sorry for his sin.
Nehemiah cooperates and stands against the crowd.
Miriam is responsible, praises God, and learns to respect authority.
Abraham listens to God, learns honesty, and prays for others.
Martha believes in God.
Peter finds self-control and learns to accept others.
Paul and Barnabas encourage others.
Paul and Silas share their faith.

Math
Our students are learning addition and subtraction strategies with and without regrouping and developing problem-solving skills.  We will also be exploring place value, and will develop the students’ recognition of patterns and numbers to 1,000.   We also work on counting money, telling time, and measurement skills.  Geometry, fractions, and probability are introduced.  The students begin to learn the basics of multiplication and division.  Students work in flexible groups, which promote positive learning experiences.  Hands-on activities are an essential part of our daily learning.

Language Arts
In Reading, the stories we read help our students discover how their experiences and relationships give them better insight into themselves.  They find that differences make each person special, just as the Lord planned.  In reading, the genres that are presented are fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, plays, biographies, and personal narratives.  The skills emphasized in reading are fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing story events, inference, drawing conclusions, and understanding the main idea.  We also learn about story characters, setting, and plot.  Key vocabulary words are also emphasized.  Phonetic and Spelling exercises include short and long vowels with connections to reading vocabulary.  In Language, the skills learned are declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences, capitalization, punctuation, nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  In writing, we learn how to write a personal narrative and a friendly letter.

Science
Learning about God’s world keeps our students in constant surprise and wonder.  Our students will begin to relate how science, technology, and society influence one another.  Students use investigation methods to gain knowledge of the world around them.  We will classify mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles into their individual groups according to their particular characteristics.  Our students will also discover the three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases).  The water cycle as is it relates to weather is explored.  Other exciting topics in Science are: light, heat and sound, the solar system, motion, simple machines, rocks and soil, and a special unit on butterflies.  In Health, we study about proper nutrition, manners, and safety.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, activities include community awareness.  Students will be able to draw maps of their community and neighborhood, and will become aware of the needs of a community.  Our lessons focus on the comparing and contrasting communities of today and communities in the past.  We will also explore the beginnings of the thirteen original colonies, and how the colonies changed and expanded.  We also learn about special holidays- Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President’s Day, Easter, and Cinco de Mayo.
